**More Than a Dozen Elected Officials Arrested While Protesting NYC Immigration Holding Facility Conditions**
NEW YORK (AP) — More than a dozen elected officials were arrested Thursday while protesting conditions at a New York City immigration holding facility. This protest comes shortly after a federal judge extended a court order requiring the government to improve its treatment of detainees.
Eleven officials were taken into custody while attempting to inspect holding rooms on the 10th floor of the government’s 26 Federal Plaza building in Manhattan. The demonstration was organized by a coalition of politicians, advocates, and faith leaders.
Among those arrested were city Comptroller Brad Lander and several members of the state legislature. They aimed to ensure compliance with a preliminary injunction issued Wednesday, which mandates that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) eliminate squalid conditions and overcrowding within the facility.
Lander had been arrested previously at the same building after he linked arms with a person authorities were trying to detain. He was released a few hours later.
Additional officials, including city Public Advocate Jumaane Williams, were arrested outside the building, according to a spokesperson for the protesters.
In total, more than 75 people were detained during the protests.
