At Kasumi Port, the only port in the Kansai region where red snow crabs are landed, the annual festival marked the season’s opening with lively events.
Freshly unloaded crabs from fishing boats were sold at prices lower than usual, attracting many visitors eager to savor the local delicacy. The highlight of the day was the Crab Eating Championship, a contest challenging participants to see how neatly they could finish their crabs within five minutes.
Spectators and participants alike enjoyed the festive atmosphere. One visitor exclaimed, “It was delicious,” while another admitted, “Eating quickly was difficult.” When asked whether crabs are best eaten slowly, a participant replied, “I want to enjoy them at my own pace.”
The red snow crab fishing season in Kasumi will continue until May 31st next year, giving plenty of time for seafood lovers to experience this seasonal treat.
