With the European Commission promising to improve EU support for research infrastructures under a new strategy adopted on September 15, it is instructive to look at the big winners so far in terms of Horizon Europe funding.

Since 2021, the EU has spent €1.2 billion on 177 research infrastructure projects. Much of this funding has gone towards creating open-science infrastructures, such as the European Open Science Cloud, and developing, improving, and creating new research infrastructure services.

The biggest winners so far in cash terms are:

**Geant**
The pan-European data network for the research and education community. Horizon Europe’s biggest research infrastructure investment by far has been in the Geant project, which connects national research and education networks across Europe, enabling seamless collaboration and data sharing among researchers.
