India’s smartphone exports to the United States—its largest market—have seen a dramatic decline of 58% between May and August 2025. According to the Global Trade Research Initiative (GTRI), this steep drop is a cause for concern, especially since smartphones face no tariffs in the US market.
Exports fell consistently over the four months, decreasing from $2.29 billion in May to just $964.8 million in August. This unexpected trend has prompted calls for an urgent investigation to uncover the underlying causes of the export slump.
In the fiscal year 2025, the US was India’s biggest smartphone market, importing $10.6 billion worth of devices—accounting for 44% of India’s total global smartphone exports valued at $24.1 billion.

### Broader Export Declines Across Sectors
The decline in exports is not limited to smartphones. Several other sectors have also experienced notable drops:
– **Tariff-free Products:** These accounted for 28.5% of India’s exports to the US in August but saw the sharpest contraction of 41.9%, falling from $3.37 billion in May to $1.96 billion in August.
– **Pharmaceuticals:** Exports decreased by 13.3%.
– **Jewelry:** Shipments dropped by 9.1%.
– **Seafood:** Experienced a significant fall of 43.8%.
Additionally, textiles, garments, and related products saw a 9.3% decline, while chemical exports dipped by 15.9% during the same period.

### Potential Impact of New Tariffs
Ajay Srivastava, founder of GTRI, emphasized that India’s exports to the US have fallen for three consecutive months. He also warned that steep tariffs imposed in August could further worsen export figures in September.

The GTRI has urged authorities and industry stakeholders to investigate these developments promptly to safeguard India’s trade interests and to identify measures to reverse this downward trend.
