As the nine-day Hindu festival of Navratri commenced, several states in India have imposed bans on the sale of meat, fish, and eggs to respect religious sentiments and promote public health.
**Bhopal District, Madhya Pradesh**
The Bhopal district administration has officially banned the sale of meat, fish, and eggs from September 22 until October 2, covering the entire duration of Navratri. Bhopal Sub-Divisional Magistrate Divya Patel stated, “Navratri will begin from September 22. In view of this, the sale of meat, fish, and eggs has been banned in this city from September 22 to October 2.”
**Uttar Pradesh’s Harpur Region**
Similarly, in Harpur, Uttar Pradesh, police authorities have ordered the closure of restaurants serving non-vegetarian food along with meat shops until October 2. Circle Officer Varun Mishra noted that these establishments have traditionally remained closed during Navratri and added that the police will ensure strict compliance to safeguard devotees’ religious sentiments.
**Haryana’s Gurugram: VHP’s Demand**
In Gurugram, Haryana, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner requesting the closure of all meat and fish shops during Navratri. The VHP argues that such establishments near temples and residential areas hurt devotees’ sentiments and violate food safety and hygiene norms. VHP leader Surendra Tanwar emphasized the importance of respecting religious sentiments while maintaining public health standards.
**Varanasi Municipal Directive**
Varanasi’s Mayor Ashok Tiwari has directed the closure of all meat and fish shops during the festival period. Municipal Corporation Public Relations Officer Sandeep Srivastava shared that the mayor has appointed veterinary officer Dr. Santosh Pal to oversee compliance through regular inspections. Violators of this order will face action in accordance with municipal regulations.
These coordinated efforts across states highlight the significance of Navratri and the respect accorded to the religious beliefs of devotees by restricting the sale of non-vegetarian products during the festival period.
