‘Robot umpires’ will make their debut in Major League Baseball (MLB) during the 2026 season, as the sport embraces the automated strike zone challenge system.

This new system, known as the Automated Ball-Strike (ABS) Challenge System, was initially tested during the 2025 pre-season. It allows players to challenge the ball and strike calls made by human umpires, enhancing accuracy and fairness in the game.

The adoption of the ABS Challenge System was approved by MLB’s joint competition committee, marking a significant step toward integrating advanced technology into baseball officiating.
