The Madras High Court is scheduled to hear a petition today filed by a victim of the tragic stampede that occurred at actor-politician Vijay’s rally in Karur. The petition demands a ban on public meetings organized by Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) until the ongoing probe into the incident is completed.

### Tragic Stampede Claims 40 Lives

The incident happened in Veluswamypuram, Karur, where a crowd of nearly 27,000 surged forward after Vijay’s delayed arrival, resulting in a deadly stampede. The tragedy claimed the lives of 40 people, including women and children, and left nearly 100 injured.

### Petition Seeks Ban on TVK Rallies

Senthilkannan, the petitioner and one of the injured victims, argued that the stampede was “not a mere accident but the direct result of reckless planning, gross mismanagement, and complete disregard for public safety.” He has urged the court to prevent Tamil Nadu police from granting permissions for any future rallies by TVK until full accountability is ensured.

### Right to Life vs. Right to Assembly

Highlighting constitutional concerns, Senthilkannan emphasized that Article 21 of the Constitution, which guarantees the Right to Life, must take precedence over the Right to Assembly when public safety is at risk.

### FIR and Legal Proceedings Underway

An FIR has been registered at the Karur Town police station concerning the stampede. This FIR includes several provisions under the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita, notably charges of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The petitioner insists that those responsible must be held accountable before any further permissions are granted.

### Police Deployment and Probe

Tamil Nadu’s Director General of Police, G Venkataraman, acknowledged that despite the unexpectedly large crowd, only 500 police personnel were deployed at the venue, which was insufficient to manage the situation effectively.

### Political Fallout and Judicial Inquiry

The tragedy has ignited a significant political controversy. Chief Minister MK Stalin has ordered a judicial probe headed by Justice Aruna Jagadeesan. Additionally, relief measures for the victims’ families have been announced.

Top TVK leaders, including party general secretary N Anand, have been booked by the state police in connection with the incident. Meanwhile, TVK is preparing to approach the Madras High Court, seeking an independent investigation and claiming evidence of a criminal conspiracy behind the stampede.

The court hearing today will be crucial in determining the future of TVK’s public gatherings and ensuring justice for the victims of this tragic event.
