The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued red and orange alerts for heavy rainfall in several districts of Maharashtra, including Mumbai, as the state experiences heavy downpours for the third consecutive day.
### Districts Under Red Alert
Nashik, Palghar, Thane, Mumbai City and Suburban, Raigad, and Pune are currently under a red alert issued by the IMD. Palghar district, in particular, faces the possibility of extremely heavy rain at isolated locations on September 29.
### Rainfall Impact in Mumbai
Mumbai has witnessed continuous heavy rains since Saturday night. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reported over 50mm of rainfall in some areas between 8:00 AM and 1:00 PM on Sunday. The island city recorded an average rainfall of 47.47mm, while the western and eastern suburbs received 53.61mm and 37.92mm respectively during the same period.
### Precautionary Measures
In response to the heavy rainfall forecast, Palghar district Collector Manik Gursal declared a holiday for all government and private schools on Monday. This precautionary step aims to ensure the safety of students and staff amid concerns of flooding and waterlogging. Education officials have been instructed to strictly adhere to this order, with teachers advised to remain alert for any emergency relief measures.
### Ongoing Weather Conditions
The IMD predicts that spells of heavy rainfall will continue over isolated areas across all districts of Maharashtra until October 3. Specific regions such as Parbhani, Hingoli, Nanded, Latur, and the ghats of Kolhapur are expected to experience heavy rains accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds.
### Recent Casualties and Relief Efforts
In the past 24 hours, the recent downpour has reportedly claimed five lives across different districts of Maharashtra. Authorities have relocated over 11,000 people to safer locations as a precaution.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis reviewed ongoing relief operations in Marathwada and Solapur, instructing district collectors to ensure the provision of essential aid. Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde also assessed the situation in Thane and Palghar districts, assuring that the administration remains on high alert to respond effectively.
