Russell Martin has been sacked as Rangers head coach after 17 games, with the club stating that “while all transition periods require some time, results have not met expectations.”

The 39-year-old’s final game in charge was a 1-1 draw at Falkirk on Sunday. Following the match, he was given a police escort away from the stadium after fans attempted to stop the team bus from leaving.

Martin had faced mounting criticism and opposition from Ibrox supporters amid a poor start to the season. Rangers struggled to find form, taking until late September to record their first Scottish Premiership win. The club also suffered a humiliating 9-1 aggregate defeat to Club Brugge in the Champions League play-offs in August.

As the domestic season enters its second international break, Rangers sit eighth in the Premiership, trailing leaders Hearts by 11 points. Under Martin’s management, the team won just one of seven league matches, drawing five. Overall, he departs with five victories in all competitions.

Assistant coach Matt Gill and first-team coach Mike Williamson will also leave the club following Martin’s dismissal.

In a statement, Rangers said:
“Russell and his staff have worked exceptionally hard throughout their time at the club. We thank them for their efforts and wish them well for the future. Further updates from the club will follow in due course.”
