**The Incident**

The Bar Council of India (BCI) has suspended advocate Rakesh Kishore with immediate effect following his attempt to attack Chief Justice of India (CJI) BR Gavai in open court on Monday. During a hearing, Kishore allegedly tried to remove his shoes and throw them at CJI Gavai before being swiftly detained by security personnel.

**Response and Aftermath**

As Kishore was being escorted out of the courtroom, he was heard exclaiming, “Sanatan ka apman nahi sahenge” (Will not tolerate disrespect of the Sanatana Dharma).

Despite the shocking attack, CJI Gavai remained composed and unfazed. Addressing the courtroom, he urged his fellow lawyers to continue their arguments without distraction. According to *Bar and Bench*, Gavai — the first Buddhist Chief Justice of India — stated,

> “Don’t get distracted by all this. We are not distracted. These things do not affect me.”

**Suspension Details**

Following the incident, the Bar Council of India issued an interim order suspending Rakesh Kishore from practicing law in any court or tribunal across India. The order, signed by BCI Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra, instructs the Bar Council of Delhi to implement the suspension immediately and update Kishore’s status on its rolls.

Further, the registries of the Supreme Court, all High Courts, and District Courts have been directed to circulate the suspension order to filing and appearance counters, as well as all relevant Bar Associations, including the Supreme Court Bar Association.

**Background Context**

The attack appears to have been triggered by CJI Gavai’s controversial remarks during a previous case concerning the restoration of a damaged Vishnu idol at Khajuraho in Madhya Pradesh.

While dismissing the plea, CJI Gavai had remarked,

> “Go and ask the deity itself to do something now. You say you are a staunch devotee of Lord Vishnu. So go and pray now. It’s an archeological site and ASI needs to give permission etc.”

He later defended his statements, emphasizing,

> “I respect all religions.”

This incident has spotlighted tensions surrounding religious sentiments in legal proceedings and reaffirmed the judiciary’s demand for decorum and respect within courtrooms.
