OpenAI is preparing to introduce collaborations with popular fictional characters on its Sora video platform. Bill Peebles, head of the Sora team at OpenAI, confirmed that cameos—appearances of well-known fictional characters within videos—are “on the roadmap.”

This announcement coincides with a shift in company policy under CEO Sam Altman, who is revising OpenAI’s previously controversial opt-out copyright framework for video generation. The new approach would provide creators with a sanctioned mechanism to feature copyrighted characters legally, moving away from unlicensed or automated use.

**Policy Changes: More Control for Rightsholders**

Altman has promised rightsholders “more granular control” over how their content is used on Sora. This system is envisioned to work similarly to the existing opt-in model for likeness rights but will offer additional safeguards and controls. The updated policy comes in response to the backlash from unauthorized and controversial AI-generated content on the platform, including problematic examples such as meth-cooking and Nazi SpongeBob videos.

**Monetization Strategy: Revenue Sharing for Rightsholders**

Alongside policy revisions, Altman revealed plans to implement a revenue-sharing model that compensates rightsholders when their characters are featured on Sora. While the payment structure is still being finalized and may require some experimentation, this initiative aims to create a sustainable ecosystem that respects intellectual property rights.

**Looking Ahead**

These changes are part of OpenAI’s larger effort to address copyright concerns while positioning Sora as a competitive AI-driven social video platform alongside giants like Meta and TikTok. By enabling licensed collaborations with beloved franchises such as Disney and Marvel, OpenAI hopes to expand creative possibilities while fostering a respectful and profitable environment for content creators and rights owners alike.
