The All Assam Lawyers’ Association has announced that no legal counsel will be provided to the accused in the case surrounding the death of popular Assamese singer Zubeen Garg. This decision comes amid an ongoing investigation into the circumstances of his untimely demise during a scuba diving accident in Singapore.
### Legal Fraternity’s Stand
The association emphasized that defending the accused would be a historical mistake, stating that their conscience prohibits them from doing so. In their official statement, they highlighted the mysterious circumstances around Garg’s death which have generated suspicion, mystery, and a sense of conspiracy. Multiple FIRs have already been lodged across different parts of Assam.
### Incident Overview
Zubeen Garg was in Singapore for the North East India Festival, where he was scheduled to perform on September 20 and 21. His sudden death at the age of 52 has shocked fans and the music industry alike.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has questioned the poisoning claims made by Garg’s bandmate, Shekhar Jyoti Goswami. The Chief Minister urged the public to remain patient until the viscera report, expected next week, is released. He also called for cooperation from Assamese witnesses in Singapore to aid the investigation.
A judicial commission has been set up to probe the case. So far, four individuals—including Shyamkanu Mahanta, Siddharth Sharma, Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, and Amrit Prabha Mahanta—have been arrested. The investigation is ongoing, with more details expected to emerge in the coming days.
