**Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first phase of the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) on Wednesday**, marking a significant milestone in India’s aviation infrastructure. Built at a cost of ₹19,650 crore, NMIA is the country’s largest greenfield airport project. Developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model by the Adani Group in collaboration with the City Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO), the airport is set to transform connectivity and economic opportunities in the region.

### Easing Congestion and Boosting Connectivity

The Navi Mumbai International Airport is expected to significantly ease congestion at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA). During the inauguration, PM Modi highlighted NMIA’s potential to become a major connectivity hub in Asia.

He emphasized the airport’s role in fostering economic growth, particularly by linking Maharashtra’s farmers to global markets. “Navi Mumbai International Airport is a project that reflects ‘Viksit Bharat’. With this new airport, farmers in Maharashtra will be connected to the markets of the Middle East and Europe,” he said.

### Cutting-Edge Technological Features in Phase One

The first phase of NMIA spans 1,160 hectares and is designed to handle 20 million passengers annually. This phase includes a single runway and one terminal building equipped with state-of-the-art technology.

Key features include:

– 5G connectivity across the airport
– Internet of Things (IoT) sensors for real-time monitoring
– Automated baggage handling systems
– Contactless processing through Digi Yatra for enhanced passenger convenience

### Fully Automated Cargo Operations

NMIA will also feature a fully automated cargo facility, allowing digital consignment tracking and climate-controlled storage areas specially designed for medicines and perishables. This will strengthen the logistics framework and support seamless movement of sensitive goods.

Commercial operations are expected to begin in December 2025, with ticket sales opening by the end of October. Leading airlines such as IndiGo, Akasa Air, and Air India Express are poised to commence flights from NMIA.

### An “Anxiety-Free” Airport Experience

According to Arun Bansal, CEO of Adani Airports Holdings Limited (AAHL), which manages NMIA, the airport’s extensive digital features aim to reduce wait times and enhance passenger comfort at every stage.

“You will be able to get a message on your phone telling you, for example, that your bag is number 20 on the carousel,” he explained — a feature designed to reduce travel stress and create an “anxiety-free” airport environment.

The Adani Group and CIDCO are developing NMIA in five phases, envisioning it as a gateway that will redefine air travel and economic opportunity in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region and beyond.
