Four people were killed in a shooting in the Mississippi Delta region following a high school football homecoming game, Mississippi state Senator Derrick Simmons told The Associated Press.
The shootings occurred in the downtown area of the small town of Leland, Mississippi, where people had gathered after the game, said Simmons, who represents the local community. Four additional victims were taken to a hospital in Greenville and then flown to a larger hospital in Jackson, the state capital, Simmons added.
Senator Simmons expressed confidence in the information provided, stating that he received updates from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, which is investigating the incident, as well as from other law enforcement authorities.
“Right now, we still have a subject at large, but I can’t give specifics,” said White on Saturday morning.
An 18-year-old man is being sought for questioning in connection with the shooting, according to a statement from the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities have asked anyone with information to contact the local police chief or sheriff’s office.
The shootings took place on the school campus where the Heidelberg Oilers were playing their homecoming football game on Friday night. However, it remains unclear when exactly the gunfire occurred or how close it was to the stadium.
White said he was at the scene on Saturday conducting an investigation and that more details might be released in the coming days.
Leland is a small town of about 640 residents located approximately 85 miles (137 kilometers) southeast of Jackson, the Mississippi state capital.
