Shubman Gill, India’s current Test captain, recently achieved a significant milestone by reaching his 10th century in Test cricket. The 26-year-old accomplished this feat on the second day of the ongoing second Test against the West Indies at New Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium. Gill scored an unbeaten 129 off 196 balls as India declared their innings at 518/5.
This remarkable performance adds to his tally as a leader, prompting a look at the Indian captains who have scored the most Test hundreds in a single calendar year as designated skippers.
### 1. Shubman Gill – 5 Hundreds in 2025
Gill took over the Test captaincy from Rohit Sharma earlier this year and has proven to be a formidable force. During his maiden leadership assignment in the England series, he scored four centuries, including a double century. The recent hundred in Delhi marked his fifth Test century in just 12 innings as captain.
Playing his seventh Test as skipper, Gill has amassed 933 runs at an outstanding average of 84.81, including 50s and 1 double century.
### 2. Virat Kohli – 5 Hundreds in 2017
Virat Kohli is the only other Indian captain to have scored more than four Test hundreds in a calendar year. He achieved this milestone first in 2017, smashing five tons—one against Bangladesh and four against Sri Lanka.
Notably, three of these centuries were converted into double centuries, showcasing his dominance with the bat. Kohli ended that year with 1,059 runs from 10 Tests (16 innings), averaging an impressive 75.64, with one conversion to 200+.
### 3. Virat Kohli – 5 Hundreds in 2018
Kohli maintained his exceptional form in 2018, a year in which India played Tests across three SENA nations (South Africa, England, and Australia). He scored five centuries again, with four coming on foreign soil—one in South Africa, one in Australia, and two in England.
His lone home century that year was against the West Indies. Kohli topped the Test run-scoring charts in 2018, accumulating 1,322 runs from 13 Tests at an average of 55.08, including five half-centuries.
