Slack, the widely used workplace communication platform, is gearing up to introduce a significant upgrade to its Slackbot feature. This update will evolve Slackbot from a basic reminder and notification tool into a powerful AI assistant designed to streamline your workday.
### A New Era for Slackbot
Currently, Slackbot functions as a fairly simple assistant, but Slack’s Chief Product Officer, Rob Seaman, revealed in an interview with *The Verge* that the company is “actually rebuilding it from the ground up as a personalized AI companion.” The enhanced Slackbot will appear as an icon next to the search bar at the top of your workspace, making it easily accessible.
### Smarter Interaction and Personalized Assistance
When you click the new Slackbot icon, a direct message–style panel will open on the right side of your screen. Users can interact with the AI by typing prompts such as “What are my priorities for today?” or “Find the latest updates on a project.” Leveraging data from your conversations, files, and workspace activity, the AI will provide personalized and relevant responses to help with daily tasks.
### Advanced Features for Complex Tasks
Beyond reminders and updates, the upgraded Slackbot can assist with more complex responsibilities. For example, it can organize a product launch plan within a Canvas by gathering information from multiple Slack channels. Additionally, it can help craft social media campaigns aligned with your brand’s tone.
The AI also improves search capabilities within workspaces by understanding natural language queries. This makes it easier to locate documents without needing to know exact keywords, enhancing overall productivity.
### Seamless Scheduling and Cross-Platform Integration
One of the standout features of the new Slackbot is its ability to schedule meetings by directly connecting with Microsoft Outlook and Google Calendar. This integration allows the AI to coordinate with colleagues effortlessly, managing calendars and booking meetings without manual input.
Slack’s AI technology already includes capabilities like summarizing threads, interpreting company jargon, and analyzing channels. These features will continue alongside the new AI assistant, further enriching the user experience.
### Security and Deployment
The AI features run on Amazon Web Services’ virtual private cloud, ensuring that no data leaves your organization’s firewall or is used for AI model training. While organizations can choose to disable AI Slackbot for their workspace, individual users will not have the option to opt out.
Currently, the upgraded Slackbot is available to 70,000 Salesforce employees and is undergoing tests with additional customers. Slack plans to roll out this major update to all users by the end of this year.
