SEATTLE — George Springer and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. provided a much-needed lift for the Toronto Blue Jays in Game 3 of the AL Championship Series on Wednesday night. Both players homered, helping Toronto build an 8-2 lead against the Seattle Mariners.
Guerrero also contributed earlier with a single in the first inning and a double during the Blue Jays’ five-run third inning. After dropping the first two games of the best-of-seven series at home in Toronto, the Blue Jays were under pressure to perform in Seattle, and Springer and Guerrero delivered.
In the first two games, Springer went 2-for-8 with a solo homer, while Guerrero was 0-for-7 with a walk. In Game 3, their impact was immediate. Springer hit a two-out solo homer off Mariners pitcher George Kirby in the fourth inning, driving a 94.8 mph sinker deep to center field. The 431-foot shot marked Springer’s 22nd postseason homer, tying him with Bernie Williams for fourth place on the all-time postseason home run list. The four-time All-Star now has three homers this postseason and also connected on Bryce Miller’s first pitch in Game 1.
Guerrero continued to shine by leading off the fifth inning with a 406-foot drive to center, again off Kirby. The five-time All-Star also scored during the third inning on Daulton Varsho’s two-run double. Both Guerrero and Springer crossed the plate on Alejandro Kirk’s three-run homer in Toronto’s four-run sixth inning.
Guerrero, 26, was outstanding in Toronto’s AL Division Series victory against the New York Yankees, batting .529 (9-for-17) with three homers and nine RBIs over four games.
With their strong performances, Springer and Guerrero played pivotal roles as the Blue Jays fought to stay alive in the AL Championship Series.
