An Indian wildlife conservationist, environmental commentator, author, and photographer with a deep passion for elephants, Vivek Menon is a renowned conservation leader whose lifelong dedication has driven positive, global change for wildlife and natural habitats.

Through expert guidance to premier organizations, participation in landmark initiatives, and training enforcement personnel across more than 50 countries, Menon has advanced solutions to critical challenges such as illegal wildlife trade and species protection. His impact extends from establishing reserves in Myanmar to helping shape international conservation policies through active roles in CITES, UNESCO, and various national advisory boards.
Menon is especially known for his work in protecting elephants and combating wildlife crime. With more than 30 years of experience, he has worked in over 100 countries and trained officials in more than 50 nations. His efforts have been instrumental in shaping major wildlife policies, and he has played a key role in setting up protected areas and conservation organizations both in India and internationally.
In India, Menon is the Founder and Executive Director of the Wildlife Trust of India (WTI). Under his leadership, WTI has carried out significant projects including elephant corridor protection, anti-poaching operations, and wildlife rescue and recovery programs.
On the international stage, Menon has held numerous important positions within the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), including serving as Chair of the Asian Elephant Specialist Group and as a member of committees that shape global biodiversity goals. He is also an accomplished author, having written ten wildlife books, including the widely acclaimed *Indian Mammals: A Field Guide*.
Menon’s outstanding contributions have earned him several prestigious international awards, such as the Clark R. Bavin Award, the Whitley Continuation Award, and the Freedom of the City of London in 2024.
His recent election as Chair of the Species Survival Commission (SSC) marks a significant milestone for diversity in conservation leadership, amplifying the voice of Asia and the Global South in global species protection efforts.
