Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi was involved in a heated exchange with a right-wing reporter outside the Capitol on Wednesday. The reporter questioned her about a false claim regarding her actions during the January 6, 2021 attack — an incident that highlights ongoing attempts by Trump supporters to rewrite what really happened that day.
Reporter Alison Steinberg followed Pelosi as she exited the Capitol and persistently asked about a debunked story. Steinberg questioned whether Pelosi was worried about a new January 6 committee blaming her for the attack and accused her of refusing to send in the National Guard.
As reported by The Hill, Pelosi, walking alongside her staff, turned around to respond firmly to the reporter. “Shut up,” she said. “I did not refuse the National Guard. The president didn’t send it.” She then challenged Steinberg, asking why she was echoing Republican talking points while pretending to be a genuine journalist.
### The Claim Is a Lie That Keeps Coming Back
Trump and his supporters have repeatedly claimed that the president requested troops on January 6 but Pelosi refused. However, this accusation is false. A congressional investigation determined that Trump never made such a request.
Additionally, the Speaker of the House does not have the authority to control the National Guard. Former acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller testified under oath that Trump did not order troops to be prepared in advance of January 6.
In fact, video footage released after the attack shows Pelosi and then-Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer making phone calls from a secure location. They were contacting members of Trump’s Cabinet and governors of nearby states, urging them to send National Guard troops to protect the Capitol.
Pelosi’s spokesperson, Ian Krager, strongly pushed back against the false claims. “Numerous independent fact-checkers have confirmed again and again that Speaker Pelosi did not plan her own assassination on January 6th,” he said. “The ongoing attempts to whitewash the deadly insurrection are shameful, unpatriotic, and pathetic.”
