During a closed-door meeting at the White House last Friday, President Donald Trump reportedly told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to accept Russia’s conditions for ending the war, warning that failure to do so could lead to potential destruction. According to several reports, the meeting devolved into a “shouting match” over the contentious issue.
Multiple sources, including the *Financial Times*, claim that President Trump urged Zelensky to cede territory to Russia — including the Donbas region — as part of a peace deal. However, on Sunday, when asked if he requested Zelensky to give up land to Russia, Trump stated, “No, we never discussed it. We think that what they should do is just stop at the lines where they are, the battle lines.”
Currently, Russia occupies roughly two-thirds of the Donbas region. Should Zelensky agree to cede land to the current front lines, it would award Moscow the majority of the territory.
“Well, he’s gonna take something. I mean, they fought and, he, uh, he has a lot, a lot of property… you know, he’s won certain property,” Trump said in a Fox News interview, referring to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
On Air Force One, Trump added Sunday, “It’s cut up right now, I think 78% of the land is already taken by Russia. They should stop right now at the battle lines. Go home, stop killing people and be done.”
During his recent visit to the White House, Zelensky also pushed for the U.S. to supply Tomahawk missiles, which would enable Ukraine to strike targets deep inside Russia. However, according to an Axios report citing two inside sources familiar with the meeting, President Trump reportedly rejected this request, instead favoring a diplomatic approach.
“Trump gave several strong statements during the meeting and at some points it got a bit emotional,” one source told Axios. “Trump was tough.”
Despite Zelensky’s persistent efforts, Trump showed no flexibility on providing Tomahawk missiles.
Meanwhile, the day before the White House meeting, Trump spoke with Putin over the phone and agreed to meet the Russian leader in Budapest, Hungary, to discuss further efforts to end the conflict. President Trump suggested that Zelensky might also attend this meeting but noted they may meet separately to “make it comfortable for everybody.”
Zelensky confirmed he would accept an invitation to the meeting “if it is an invitation in a format where we meet as three or, as it’s called, shuttle diplomacy. Then in one format or another, we will agree.”
The Budapest meeting has yet to be scheduled, but bringing the war to a conclusion remains a priority for the Trump administration.
