The new charging station at the library will be a Level 3, or direct-current fast charging, station. According to the Alternative Fuels Data Center from the United States Department of Energy, Level 3 chargers provide more miles of range with a shorter charge time compared to other chargers.

Currently, there is already a Level 2 charging station located in the west parking lot at City Hall. Both the new library station and the City Hall site are set to have two chargers each, with a minimum of four ports available.

The city’s new charging stations are being funded through a state grant, as reported previously. Recently, the city council modified the charging rates for these stations. Level 2 charging now costs 25 cents per kilowatt-hour, while the new Level 3 fast chargers are priced at 50 cents per kilowatt-hour.

Additionally, a 30-minute grace period has been implemented for customers to move their vehicles after charging is complete. If a vehicle remains in the charging spot beyond this grace period, an overage fee of $1 per minute will be applied.

The site use agreement between the city and the public library, approved on Monday, originally planned for the charging station to be located in the parking lot on Shumway Avenue near Flinn Street. However, due to “too many conflicts with existing infrastructure to cost-effectively install the chargers there,” according to a memo from the city’s Electric Superintendent Steve Allen, the city sought a new location and ultimately chose the library at 10 S.
