CM Punk’s GTS (Go to Sleep) is undoubtedly one of the most iconic finishing moves in professional wrestling history. Both WWE and later AEW have done an exceptional job of protecting the move throughout Punk’s illustrious career. However, in a surprising moment on an episode of AEW Dynamite, an ex-AEW star executed the famous move in an unexpected way that shocked the wrestling world — including The Best in the World himself.
### Bobby Fish’s Unexpected Kick Out at GTS
On the October 27, 2021, episode of AEW Dynamite, Bobby Fish, who later left AEW in August 2022, faced off against CM Punk in an incredible showdown. Both performers delivered a stellar match, but the closing moments stunned fans everywhere. Fish kicked out at the GTS, an outcome that was completely unscripted.
Recently, Bobby Fish opened up about this major botch on his YouTube channel, revealing that the kick out was unintentional. The former Undisputed ERA member explained that he did not intend to steal the spotlight or get over on Punk. However, in the heat of the moment, his brain didn’t quite function as planned.
Fish said, “In the moment of the pin, he squeezed my arm—or my leg, or… I don’t know, to be honest, it was so long ago I don’t remember exactly what it was. But it’s what we call in the industry ‘the office’ or ‘the Iggy.’ You generally do it to get someone’s attention. There wasn’t a lot of time to think about this. It was ‘do or don’t do,’ and I did and what I did was kick out.”
### The Aftermath: Bobby Fish’s Criticism of CM Punk
Bobby Fish also opened up about the aftermath of the botch and how CM Punk reacted to it. The 49-year-old revealed that Punk was not pleased with him kicking out at the GTS. However, instead of addressing the issue face-to-face, Punk went straight to AEW owner Tony Khan and the management team.
Fish expressed disappointment in Punk’s approach, stating that he expected to discuss the matter directly with his opponent. “When we got to the back, my expectation was that I would encounter my opponent, we’d discuss it. That opportunity was not given to me. What was given to me was Mr. Brooks in the ear of Tony Khan,” Fish said.
He went on to call Punk’s reaction “super passive-aggressive,” adding, “it’s not the way men—it’s not the way masculine people handle business.”
### Fish’s Reflection on the Incident
While the botch itself doesn’t bother Bobby Fish, the way Punk handled the situation left a bad taste in his mouth regarding Punk’s work ethic and professionalism.
This candid revelation from Fish provides an interesting behind-the-scenes look at the pressures and dynamics within AEW and highlights just how rare it is for a move as protected as the GTS to be kicked out of — especially without prior planning.
