This month’s analysis compares the aligned worldwide sales of the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. The PlayStation 5 launched in November 2020, while the PlayStation 4 debuted in November 2013. This alignment means the holiday periods for the two consoles correspond closely.

As of September 2025, the PlayStation 5 has been available for 59 months. The PlayStation 4 reached this milestone back in September 2018.

**Sales Figures:**

– **PlayStation 5 Total Sales:** 80,248,284 units
– **PlayStation 4 Total Sales:** 83,798,614 units
– **Total Lead:** PlayStation 4 leads by 3,550,330 units

**Gap Changes:**

– Gap change in the latest month: 337,466 units in favor of the PlayStation 4
– PS4 gap change over the last 12 months: 1,130,566 units in favor of the PS4

In the most recent month, the sales gap widened by approximately 0.34 million units, favoring the PlayStation 4 compared to the aligned launch timeline of the PlayStation 5.

Over the past 12 months, the PlayStation 4 has outsold the PlayStation 5 by over 1.13 million units. Currently, the PS4 holds a lead of roughly 3.55 million units.

Taking a longer view, the PlayStation 4 sold a total of 117.20 million units over its lifetime. The PS4 hit major milestones at the following months after launch:

– 100 million units by month 72
– 110 million units by month 79

Compared to these figures, the PlayStation 5 is currently trailing the PS4 by approximately 36.95 million units in lifetime sales.
