Perhaps they saw this one coming. The Nashville Predators showed a good sense of humor after being gently mocked on “Saturday Night Live” for the unfortunate naming of their recent community outreach campaign, “Preds in the Community.”
A skit from the Nov. 1 episode of the popular sketch comedy show, hosted by Miles Teller, went viral after depicting NHL players promoting the league’s annual community outreach day in July. The sketch featured players from the New York Rangers and Los Angeles Kings but focused mainly on the Predators, playing off their eyebrow-raising slogan.
In the skit, Teller portrayed a Nashville player who tried to highlight the team’s charitable work but kept getting hung up on the poorly phrased script. The “Top Gun: Maverick” star read increasingly suggestive lines, beginning with “I’m a Predator in my community” and escalating to “I work in hospitals to make sick kids feel touched.” The sketch reached its climax when Teller’s character introduced himself: “Chase Kid, right wing Predator.”
Nashville took the jokes in stride and responded to the viral clip on social media with a tongue-in-cheek reference to the season two finale of HBO’s “Euphoria,” posting on X (formerly Twitter), “Wait, is this f- play about us?”
Capitalizing on the over 1.1 million views the sketch garnered on X, the Predators encouraged viewers to support the Nashville Predators Foundation. Under their initial post, they wrote, “While you’re here, learn more and donate to support the [Nashville Predators Foundation’s] work in Nashville and middle Tennessee!”
Since its inception in 1998, the 501(c)(3) charity organization has aimed to “use our distinctive set of assets to support the youth and their families in the community that we call home.” The Nashville Predators Foundation has awarded over $11.2 million in grants to local organizations addressing educational, social, health, and cultural needs.
Despite the humor, it’s clear the foundation’s impact is no joke—though the “Preds in the Community” slogan might still need some work.
