**Driver Hits and Kills Pedestrian in San Jose**
SAN JOSE — A driver struck and killed a pedestrian Monday evening in San Jose, police reported.
The fatal collision occurred just after 5:15 p.m. near the intersection of South First and Martha streets, according to a statement from the San Jose Police Department on social media.
The pedestrian was transported to a hospital, where they later died from their injuries, police confirmed. Additional details about the incident were not immediately available Monday evening.
“This investigation is active and ongoing,” authorities said.
The death marks the city’s 34th traffic fatality of the year. For comparison, San Jose had recorded 44 traffic-related deaths at this point in 2024.
Police have asked motorists to avoid the area. They noted that First Street from Martha Street to Virginia Street “will be blocked off in both directions for a significant amount of time.”
