US Intelligence Reports Indicate IDF Concerns Over Targeting Civilians in Gaza
According to US intelligence gathered during the first year of the conflict, five former American officials revealed to Reuters that the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) reportedly feared there was proof it was intentionally targeting civilians. Israeli military lawyers were said to be concerned about a growing body of evidence suggesting that the country’s actions in Gaza could amount to war crimes.
The conflict began after Hamas launched a raid on October 7, 2023, killing around 1,200 people. In response, Israel initiated a military campaign involving retaliatory strikes and ground operations. Since then, Gaza’s health authorities report that over 68,000 Palestinians have been killed.
The situation has drawn significant international attention. A United Nations commission has accused Israel of committing acts that may amount to genocide. Additionally, Israel is currently the subject of two separate international legal proceedings: one before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) and another at the International Criminal Court (ICC).
A Reuters report published on Friday further highlighted that the Israeli military itself had expressed doubts regarding the conduct of its operations in Gaza, raising concerns amid the broader allegations of potential war crimes.
This developing story continues to prompt intense debate over the legal and humanitarian implications of the ongoing conflict.
