The Wake County Sheriff’s Office and the State Bureau of Investigation are currently conducting an investigation following the death of an inmate due to a medical emergency.
On Monday, detention officers observed that 62-year-old Orin Gist was experiencing a medical emergency at approximately 3:30 a.m. Staff at the detention center immediately attempted life-saving measures while EMS was called to the scene.
Gist was transported to the hospital, where deputies report he later passed away.
At this time, deputies have not released specific information regarding the nature of the medical emergency. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death is ongoing.
