Rajanah Reed scored 15 minutes into the first half as the University of Central Florida secured a 2-0 victory over the University of Maine in the first round of the NCAA Division I women’s soccer tournament on Friday in Orlando, Florida.
The Black Bears suffered a first-round exit for the third consecutive season, finishing their year with a 6-8-4 record. Meanwhile, Central Florida improved to 12-3-5 and advanced to face No. 2 Duke in the second round. The Blue Devils earned their spot by defeating Elon 3-0 on Friday.
Maine earned their place in the tournament by narrowly beating Vermont 3-2 (4-3 in penalty kicks) in the America East Conference championship game.
In addition to Reed’s early goal, Hannah Boughton added a second-half strike for Central Florida. On the defensive end, Elena Barenburg made three saves for Maine, while Genesis Perez Watson recorded two saves for Central Florida.
