A striking new mural has appeared in Wolverhampton, paying tribute to footballer Diogo Jota, who tragically died in a car crash alongside his brother earlier this year. Jota, who played for Wolves from 2017 to 2020 before moving to Liverpool, was remembered by both cities, leaving tributes following the 28-year-old’s death in northern Spain in July.

The mural, a heartfelt homage to the much-loved player, now adorns the side of the Ash Tree pub in Wolverhampton. Over the course of three days, local artist Lucy Danielle, 35, from Codsall, brought the artwork to life. Lucy, who has been painting for about 20 years, was approached by the pub owner to create a football-themed mural featuring several notable players, including Jota.

Ms Danielle shared her experience, saying, “The reaction has been really good, everyone was really friendly when I was doing it. To be honest, it’s been good feedback from everyone.” The sense of community and appreciation was clear throughout the project.

Jota takes centre stage in the mural, depicted with his hand over his heart and the Wolves crest clearly visible beneath. His shirt is cleverly split down the middle—Liverpool on the left, Wolves on the right—symbolizing his football journey and connection to both clubs.

Behind Jota, other football stars such as Bruno Fernandes, Cole Palmer, Chloe Kelly, and Bukayo Saka are also featured, adding depth and wider representation to the tribute.

Reflecting on the finished piece, Lucy said, “It’s great to see the outcome at the end and see how other people find it as well, it’s a good feeling.”

The mural stands not only as a memorial for Diogo Jota but also as a celebration of the football community and its enduring spirit.
