MSPCA-Angell is hosting an emergency adoption event beginning on Friday following the surrender of 149 animals. The 149 animals were surrendered this week from two separate law enforcement cases, according the organization. In the first case, 26 animals 24 dogs and two cats were seized from a Winchendon property on Aug. 29. Following the seizure, seven puppies were born in foster care, the MSPCA says. In the second case, 116 animals, consisting of mostly farm birds, were removed from a Plympton property on Sept. 23. The Plympton animals were surrendered in court on Monday, and the Winchendon animals were surrendered on Tuesday, according to the MSPCA. Once animals are surrendered, the MSPCA is able to place them in shelters. “In both cases, we had probable cause to believe that animal cruelty laws were being violated,” Chris Schindler, director of the MSPCA-Angell’s Law Enforcement Department, said in a statement. “When we arrived, we saw that the animals were living in unsanitary conditions. Some did not have adequate access to food and water.” Over the last three months, the MSPCA has taken in a total of 245 seized animals, including nearly 40 dogs. Now, “we really need adopters to come out and give any of the animals in our care but especially dogs a happy home to ensure that we’ll be able to say yes the next time that an animal needs help,” Schindler added. All Massachusetts MSCPA locations will be hosting an emergency two-day dog adoption event on Friday and Saturday. All dogs, including puppies, in the shelters’ care will be available to adopt for a “pay-what-you-can” fee. The fees collected will fund rehoming animals in the future, the MSPCA says. “Every kennel that opens when a dog is adopted is another space we can use to help an animal in need,” Schindler said.
