A Rancho El Dorado man got more than coal in his stocking this Christmas—he’s now facing multiple felony charges.

According to a probable cause statement, the incident began on Christmas Eve when Latoya McMurray reported to Maricopa police that she had lost her black Kate Spade wallet while shopping at Bashas’. Later, she was notified of fraudulent activity on her bank account.

Investigators discovered there were four attempts to transfer money from McMurray’s account to a Cash App account belonging to someone named Rayland Cox. The first attempt, just after 4 p.m., was for $500. Subsequent attempts decreased in amount: $200, then $150, and finally $80. None of the transfers were successful.

Police located a 47-year-old man named Rayland Cox living in Rancho El Dorado. When officers met Cox at his Little Drive home, he confirmed he had been at Bashas’ that day. When asked, he produced McMurray’s wallet.

Officers informed Cox that they were aware of the Cash App transfer attempts. The day after Christmas, they returned and arrested him on charges of theft, theft of a credit card, and fraudulent use of a credit card.

Cox admitted he had found the wallet and tried to send money to himself through Cash App. Police also noted that he “only turned over the wallet upon police contact hours later.”

If convicted, Cox could face up to three years in prison.
