After the 2025-26 season concluded, the Texas Longhorns football program made significant changes to its coaching staff. Head coach Steve Sarkisian decided to shake up the defense by replacing defensive coordinator Pete Kwiatkowski with Will Muschamp.

On Friday, Texas took another major step by adding a high-level assistant to support Muschamp on the defensive side of the ball. According to Eric Nahlin of On3 Sports, Texas is officially hiring Blake Gideon, the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets’ defensive coordinator.

Gideon is no stranger to the Longhorns, having played safety for Texas from 2008 through 2011. After his playing career, he transitioned into coaching, starting in 2014. Over the past 11 years, Gideon has steadily climbed the coaching ranks. He spent four seasons as Texas’s safety coach before accepting the defensive coordinator role at Georgia Tech ahead of the 2025 season.

Now, Gideon is heading back to his alma mater to join Steve Sarkisian’s coaching staff once again. Inside Texas reports: “Former Texas safety and assistant coach Blake Gideon is returning to the Forty Acres. After taking the Georgia Tech defensive coordinator position ahead of the 2025 season, Gideon is headed back to Austin to work for Steve Sarkisian and Will Muschamp.”

At 36 years old, Gideon will assume a high-ranking role within the Longhorns’ defensive coaching staff. Although his one-year stint at Georgia Tech was challenging—where the Yellow Jackets finished with the 99th-ranked defense in FBS—Texas is hopeful that Gideon’s experience and roots with the program will help bolster their defensive unit moving forward.
