**Stephen L. Allred**
*July 16, 1944 – January 6, 2026*
Stephen L. Allred, affectionately known as “Officer Friendly,” passed away peacefully on January 6, 2026, in Delta, Utah.
Steve was born on July 16, 1944, in Delta, Utah, to Ervin and Olive Taylor Allred. When asked if he grew up in Delta, he would often say, “I was raised in Delta, I never grew up.”
Steve attended school in Delta, graduating from Delta High School—go Rabbits!—in May of 1962. In September of that same year, he enrolled in Salt Lake Barber College, graduating in April 1963. Shortly after, he accepted a position at Mel’s Barbershop on the campus of Utah State University in Logan, Utah, where he worked until October 1964.
At that time, Steve answered a mission call from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, serving in the South African mission. He honorably returned home in April 1967.
Following his return, Steve began dating Ellen Kaye Anderson, whom he met at the A&W restaurant owned by his parents. Despite the distance—Ellen was attending school in Cedar City while Steve lived in Logan—their relationship blossomed into a long-distance romance. They married on June 14, 1968, in the Salt Lake Temple, and together they raised five children: Shenagh, Greg, Karalee, Wade, and Brenton.
Steve began his career in law enforcement in March 1979 and retired in June 2006. It is said that nearly everyone in Millard County has a story about an “encounter” with Steve, whether good or bad. He was also a dedicated Hunter’s Safety instructor for 50 years—the longest tenure in the state of Utah. Undoubtedly, at least one of his children might not have passed their course without his help.
Steve loved camping, riding his side-by-side, and spending as much time as possible in the Ponderosa Pines. Locals knew exactly where “Steve’s Spot” was.
Throughout his life, Steve served faithfully in various church callings, with his favorite being his work with the Primary children. Every Sunday, children would line up to receive a mint from Steve. He was also thoughtful in remembering every birthday, sending cards to all.
Steve treasured serving in the baptistry at the Payson Temple, a calling he only relinquished when his health no longer permitted. He would often say, “I feel closer to Ellen when I’m there.”
He was an amazing grandfather and great-grandfather and will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at Millard County Care Center, Oak City 2nd Ward, and the wonderful community of Oak City for their support and care.
Steve is survived by his children Shenagh (Jody), Greg (Holly), Karalee (Jeff), and Wade; 15 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; brother Howard Allred; sister Linda Grygla; and many sisters- and brothers-in-law.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife Ellen, son Brenton, parents Ervin and Olive, and brothers-in-law Kevin Anderson and Robert Grygla.
May his memory be a blessing to all who knew him.
