A supermassive black hole named SMSS J052915.80-435152.0 (or J0529) is emitting gas at record-breaking speeds of up to 10,000 km per second. This remarkable discovery was made by Associate Professor Christian Wolf and his team from The Australian National University (ANU).
### Technological Advancement Leads to New Insights
Using advanced optical instruments at the European Southern Observatory in Chile, the research team was able to magnify the black hole’s light and closely observe the swirling gas around it. Thanks to these technological advancements, they reassessed the black hole’s mass and found it to be more than ten times lower than previously estimated.
Professor Wolf explained that despite the quasar’s extreme luminosity, the central black hole’s mass is “only” about one billion times that of our Sun.
### Unusual Black Hole Behavior
Contrary to earlier assumptions that the black hole spins rapidly, Professor Wolf revealed that J0529 is actually ejecting the gas it consumes. The gas is being blown away by the intense radiation pressure from the surrounding light. This phenomenon makes J0529 the brightest object observed in the universe to date.
Studying this black hole has been challenging due to its vast distance—over 12 billion light-years away. However, the new observations have shed light on its inner structure and behavior.
### Implications for Understanding Supermassive Black Holes
The discovery of J0529 may provide valuable clues about the origin of supermassive black holes in the universe. According to Professor Wolf, although the rapid growth rate of these objects is difficult to explain, revising the mass estimates suggests that supermassive black holes might originate from collapsing stars during the early stages of the universe.
This finding opens new avenues for studying how these enigmatic cosmic giants form and evolve over billions of years, deepening our understanding of the cosmos.
