**LAYER Designs MAZZU Modular Outdoor Sleep System**
The MAZZU Camping Mattress is a modular sleep system designed for outdoor use, developed by design studio LAYER in collaboration with sleep start-up MAZZU. This innovative, foam-free mattress is built around 72 independent spring units that adjust to the body, offering ergonomic support in a portable and repairable format.
Unlike conventional foam or inflatable pads, the mattress replaces these with isolated, pre-compressed coil units encased in durable jackets. Each spring unit adapts independently to the body’s contours, providing support for various sleeping positions. The modular construction allows the components to be easily assembled using snap-fit connectors and paracord lashings. A slim topper is included to provide surface leveling and additional softness.
The color palette of the MAZZU Camping Mattress references typical outdoor gear, incorporating natural foliage tones paired with bright accents for improved visibility. Its open structure exposes the intricate engineering of the spring units, highlighting the mattress’s unique design.

### Compact, Repairable, and Eco-Friendly
LAYER’s design for the spring units enables them to nest compactly for easy transport. The complete system — including the foldable base, spring modules, and topper — fits into a wheeled case about the size of a standard cooler. This case is not only functional for carrying but can also be repurposed on-site as a storage box or nightstand, adding versatility to campsite setup.
Foam-based mattresses are known contributors to global waste and chemical pollution. The MAZZU Camping Mattress addresses this environmental concern by being entirely free of polyurethane foam and glue. Each component — from the base to the spring units and topper — can be individually cleaned, repaired, or replaced. This approach extends the product lifespan and significantly reduces its environmental footprint, aligning with circular economy principles.
