The Church of England has made history with the appointment of its first-ever female Archbishop of Canterbury. Bishop of London, Sarah Mullally, was announced for this landmark role on Friday.

As the principal leader of the Church of England, the Right Reverend and Right Honourable Dame Sarah Mullally, aged 63, will now lead approximately 85 million Anglicans across 165 countries around the world.

Mullally will hold the title of Archbishop of Canterbury-designate until she legally assumes the position in January 2026.

She has served as the Bishop of London since 2018, being the first woman to hold that role. Before that, she was the Bishop of Crediton in the Diocese of Exeter.

Prior to her ordination in 2001, Sarah Mullally made significant contributions to healthcare; she became the UK government’s youngest Chief Nursing Officer for England at the age of 37.
