—
Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first phase of the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) on Wednesday, marking a significant milestone in India’s aviation sector. Built at a cost of ₹19,650 crore, NMIA is the country’s largest greenfield airport project and has been developed through a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model by the Adani Group in collaboration with the City Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO).
### Easing Congestion and Boosting Connectivity
The NMIA is poised to ease severe congestion at Mumbai’s existing Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA). Speaking at the inauguration, PM Modi highlighted that NMIA will serve as a major connectivity hub in Asia, enhancing the region’s global linkages.
He emphasized how the airport will contribute to economic growth by connecting Maharashtra’s farmers with international markets in the Middle East and Europe, stating,

### State-of-the-Art Features in the First Phase
Spanning 1,160 hectares, the first phase of NMIA is designed to handle 20 million passengers annually and currently includes a single runway and one terminal building. This phase incorporates advanced technology aimed at offering a seamless travel experience, such as:
– 5G connectivity across the airport premises
– Internet of Things (IoT) sensors for real-time monitoring
– Automated baggage handling systems
– Contactless passenger processing through Digi Yatra integration
These features collectively ensure increased comfort and convenience for travelers.
### Fully Automated Cargo Operations
The airport’s cargo facility will be fully automated, equipped with digital consignment tracking and climate-controlled zones specially designed for transporting medicines and perishable goods. This modern infrastructure is expected to enhance logistical efficiency and support trade.
Commercial operations at NMIA are slated to begin by December 2025, with ticket sales opening by the end of October. Airlines such as IndiGo, Akasa Air, and Air India Express have already confirmed plans to start flights from the new airport.
### An “Anxiety-Free” Travel Experience
Arun Bansal, CEO of Adani Airports Holdings Limited (AAHL), which manages NMIA, described the airport as an “anxiety-free” facility thanks to its smart digital features. Passengers will receive timely updates on their smartphones, such as notifications about baggage carousel numbers and boarding details, significantly reducing wait times and travel stress.
The NMIA is planned for development in five phases, underscoring a long-term vision to transform Navi Mumbai into a major aviation and economic hub.
