**What’s the story?**
Former England captain Steven Gerrard has declined the opportunity to return as head coach of Scottish football club Rangers. According to Sky Sports News, this decision came after constructive talks between both parties on Thursday and Friday. Despite positive discussions, Gerrard felt it wasn’t the right time for a comeback and opted out of continuing in the recruitment process.
**New contenders**
Who else is in the running for the position? Former Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl has impressed Rangers chiefs during the recruitment process and remains a strong candidate for the job. Rohl, who left Sheffield Wednesday in July, was approached by Rangers before their previous appointment of Russell Martin.
Russell Martin was sacked after just 123 days in charge following a 1-1 draw at Falkirk. At the time of his departure, Rangers were placed eighth in the Scottish Premiership, prompting the club to begin searching for a new head coach.
**Gerrard’s managerial journey so far**
Steven Gerrard led Rangers to a Scottish Premiership title in 2021 before departing to manage Aston Villa. His spell at Villa lasted less than a year, ending in dismissal. Subsequently, he took up the managerial role at Saudi Pro League club Al Ettifaq, where he remained for 18 months.
Despite the recent talks with Rangers, both parties have left the door open for potential future collaboration.
**Departure from Al-Ettifaq**
Gerrard parted ways with Al-Ettifaq in January 2025 by mutual consent after an 18-month tenure. He initially joined the Saudi Arabian club in July 2023 and signed a two-year contract extension in January 2024, intending to remain until 2027.
During his time at Al-Ettifaq, Gerrard managed 59 matches across all competitions. His record included 23 wins, 16 draws, and 20 defeats, giving him a win percentage of 39%.
