Journalist Michael Weiss commented on Tuesday that President Donald Trump appears to be “getting kind of tired” of the war in Ukraine. Weiss pointed to the president’s “no-energy” attempts to pressure Ukraine into accepting Russia’s terms for peace as evidence of this fatigue.
During his campaign, Trump promised to end the war in Ukraine within 24 hours. However, nearly a year after he was sworn in, the conflict continues unabated.
Recently, Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss a potential peace plan. According to reports, the conversation deteriorated into a shouting match, reminiscent of an earlier confrontation the two leaders had in the Oval Office earlier this year.
At the meeting, Trump tried to persuade Zelenskyy to relinquish some territory that Russia has so far failed to control in exchange for ending the war, Weiss explained. When Zelenskyy refused, Trump seemed to lose interest in continuing the negotiation.
Weiss elaborated on the meeting during a new episode of “The Bulwark Podcast” on Tuesday.
“I’m reading this as yet again, Donald Trump, in spite of his desperation to be crowned prince of peace, king of America, s—dropper extraordinaire on the ‘No Kings’ protesters, he’s getting kind of tired,” Weiss said. “He’s sort of a no-energy Trump, to be honest. He’s trying to bully the Ukrainians, but he’s not doing it with the vim and vigor that he did eight months ago.”
Weiss also noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin appears to be influencing some of Trump’s actions. For example, Putin called Trump shortly after the president expressed support for selling Tomahawk missiles to Ukraine. Following that call, Weiss observed, Trump began sounding “like Putin.”
“He has long had a deep abiding affinity for Putin,” Weiss remarked. “Putin is the kind of authoritarian strongman that Donald Trump would like to be.”
