Qualcomm’s Latest Mid-Range Chip Features Upgraded CPU and GPU
If you haven’t noticed already, Qualcomm has a bit of an issue with the names of its chips. Adding to the confusion is the company’s latest mid-range chipset, the Snapdragon 6s Gen 4, which is designed for more affordable mid-range devices.
### Snapdragon 6s Gen 4 Gets a Faster CPU and GPU
Wondering where exactly the Snapdragon 6s Gen 4 stands? It sits at the lower end of the mid-range spectrum, while the Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 targets the higher end. This new chip is the successor to the 6s Gen 3, but interestingly, it is slower than the Snapdragon 6 Gen 4. You can thank Qualcomm for this naming mess.
Built on Samsung’s 4 nm process, the Snapdragon 6s Gen 4 packs four performance cores clocked at up to 2.4 GHz and four efficiency cores running at 1.8 GHz. Qualcomm claims a 36% improvement in CPU performance, alongside a 59% boost in GPU performance compared to its predecessor.
### Features and Specifications
The new chip supports FHD+ 144Hz displays, mmWave and sub-6 GHz 5G connectivity, and Wi-Fi 6E. Its Qualcomm Spectra ISP supports a single 200MP sensor for photo capture, a single 32MP camera, or dual 16MP cameras, with video capture capabilities of up to 30fps at 2K resolution.
Devices powered by the Snapdragon 6s Gen 4 will support up to 12 GB of LPDDR5x RAM and UFS 3.1 storage.
### No AI on This Chip
What stands out with the Snapdragon 6s Gen 4 is Qualcomm’s omission of any mention of AI capabilities. It appears that devices using this chip won’t prioritize AI features, if they have any at all.
This lack of AI support is not entirely surprising. The few devices equipped with the Snapdragon 6s Gen 3 were priced around the $300 range, and AI remains more of an upper mid-range feature. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 7 Gen 4, 6 Gen 4, and 7s Gen 4, all announced earlier this year, do support AI functionalities.
### Slowly Making Cheaper Phones Better
While many are excited about Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, improvements in lower-end chips are arguably more indicative of technological progress. Not everyone wants or can afford cutting-edge technology, so it’s encouraging to see more affordable chipsets reaching a wider audience.
As these mid-range and budget-level chips continue to improve, the overall mobile experience becomes better for more people. That said, for those who crave the best performance, flagships will always hold a special place.
