WASHINGTON (AP) — Hormel Foods is recalling nearly 4.9 million pounds of frozen boneless chicken products sold to restaurants, cafeterias, and other food service outlets, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced Saturday.
The recall comes after customers reported finding metal fragments in the chicken breast and thigh products. Hormel Foods determined that the metal contamination originated from a conveyor belt used during production, according to the FSIS.
There have been no reports of illnesses or injuries related to the recalled products.
The affected items, labeled as Hormel Fire Braised chicken, were distributed to HRI Commercial Food Service, a restaurant supply company with locations nationwide, between February 10 and September 19. These products are sold exclusively to food service companies and are not available directly to consumers.
The FSIS advised that some of the recalled chicken may still be in freezers at hotels, restaurants, and cafeterias, and urged establishments to dispose of the products immediately.
Hormel Foods has notified all customers who received the impacted products to ensure proper handling and disposal.
Consumers or food service operators with questions about the recall can contact Hormel Foods through the company website or by calling 1-800-523-4635.
