Hideo Kojima has delivered some of gaming’s most memorable experiences over the past few decades. However, a new account reveals that he almost brought his unique vision to one of Hollywood’s biggest franchises: The Matrix.

According to a story shared by former Konami Vice President of Licensing Christopher Bergstresser in an interview with Time Extension, the Wachowskis themselves approached Hideo Kojima and Konami with the concept of creating a video game based on The Matrix.

“The Wachowskis were big fans of Kojima,” Bergstresser told the outlet. “So Kazumi Kitaue, Kojima, Aki Saito (who still works with Kojima), and I were at the Konami HQ, and we got a call from the Wachowskis, who wanted to come in and meet with Kojima. So they did!”

Despite the interest from the filmmakers, Bergstresser claims that Kazumi Kitaue, a Konami producer at the time, ultimately nixed the idea. When the Wachowskis asked about Konami making a Matrix game, Kitaue simply replied “no.”

This decision was likely influenced by Konami’s desire to have Kojima focus on *Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty* instead.

Interestingly, according to another Konami employee, Kojima himself continued to express interest in developing a Matrix game even after this particular pitch was turned down.

This fascinating anecdote highlights a missed opportunity to see Kojima’s creative touch applied to the iconic Matrix universe, leaving fans to wonder what might have been.
