A horrific tragedy has unfolded in Hermosillo, Mexico, where at least 23 shoppers, including children, perished in a fire that broke out at a Waldo’s discount store.

Videos and photos went viral showing the scene, with one video capturing the fire inside the store extending to a car outside. According to La Jornada, the 23 victims included six minors, and dozens more were seriously injured. The incident occurred on November 1, when an explosion was followed by a fire.

Most victims died from toxic gas inhalation, La Jornada reported. The store was crowded with customers making purchases ahead of the Day of the Dead, a significant holiday in Mexico. The deceased included 12 women, five men, four girls, and two boys.

The Associated Press shared footage showing a burned man collapsing outside the store. They also reported that the fire originated in a transformer. Photos circulating on social media showed the charred remains of the Waldo’s store.

In response, Waldo’s posted a statement on Facebook expressing deep regret over the incident. The translated statement read:

“At Waldo’s, we deeply regret the incident at one of our stores in Hermosillo, which resulted in the loss of life and injuries, according to preliminary reports from authorities. We express our solidarity with those affected and their families. Our team is working to provide them with the necessary support during this difficult time. The causes of the incident are being investigated by local authorities, as is standard procedure in these cases. We will cooperate fully and responsibly in any way required.”

Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the explosion and fire as the community mourns this tragic loss.
