The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) has issued a directive to grocery stores prohibiting them from offering discounts to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients during the government shutdown.

According to an email shared on Sunday by MSNBC’s Catherine Rampell on the social media platform X, grocery stores are instructed that they “must offer eligible goods at the same prices and on the same terms” to all customers.

This move by the USDA restricts any special pricing or discounts for SNAP beneficiaries, ensuring that they pay the standard price for eligible food items throughout the shutdown period. The directive aims to maintain price consistency across all customers during this time of government disruption.
