Apple Set to Launch Five New Satellite-Based Features for iPhones
Apple is rapidly evolving beyond simply equipping its iPhones with satellite connectivity. According to Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, the company has ambitious plans to introduce at least five new satellite-based features in the near future, marking a significant expansion for its devices.
Expansive Satellite Connectivity Plans
In his latest Power On newsletter, Gurman reveals that Apple is working on several innovative updates aimed at bolstering satellite connectivity on iPhones. Here’s what you can expect:
1. Apple Maps Upgrade
Apple is planning a substantial upgrade to the Maps app, enabling navigation via satellite connectivity. This means iPhone users will be able to access navigation features even when Wi-Fi or cellular broadband is unavailable or unreliable.
2. Improved Hardware for Natural Usage
Apple aims to leverage new tech advancements and hardware upgrades to maintain satellite connectivity indoors, overcoming the usual limitation that requires a clear line-of-sight to satellites.
3. Satellite-Based Cellular 5G Broadband
Next-generation iPhones are expected to support 5G Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) technology. This innovation would allow satellite connections to enhance cellular network coverage, potentially delivering reliable high-speed broadband wherever you go.
4. Third-Party App Support
Apple will soon provide an API allowing third-party developers to integrate satellite connectivity into their apps. This move will enable a wider range of services and experiences powered by satellite communication.
5. Paid Add-On Services
Many of these new features are expected to be offered as part of a paid add-on package, expanding Apple’s premium service portfolio.
Current Satellite Capabilities and Future Expansion
For those unfamiliar, Apple currently uses Globalstar’s satellite network for its ‘Emergency SOS’ feature, available on iPhone 14 and newer models. This service lets users contact emergency services, share their location, and send messages to personal contacts and first responders when outside regular cellular or Wi-Fi coverage.
However, the rollout of additional satellite-powered features will require Globalstar to upgrade its infrastructure. Gurman notes that if SpaceX were to acquire Globalstar, Apple could accelerate its plans considerably.
Industry Partnerships and Potential Changes
Recent reports from The Information suggest that Apple and SpaceX may soon partner to further advance satellite connectivity for iPhones. SpaceX’s new Starlink satellites are now compatible with the radio spectrum used by Apple devices. With growing distance between Apple and Globalstar—and Globalstar’s chairman, James Monroe, discussing a possible $10 billion sale—the landscape for satellite partnerships may change rapidly.
