Ever wanted Nintendo to branch out its Super Mario Maker formula to its other hit games? Imagine allowing players to create their own Legend of Zelda dungeons or Metroidvania maps. While Nintendo hasn’t done this yet, an upcoming Steam game is applying that logic to Mario Kart’s thrilling chaos, letting you create your own kart racing tracks.
Mythic Kart Racer’s concept is immediately understandable. It features third-person driving reminiscent of a blend between Super Mario Kart and Mario Kart 64, complete with drifting-fueled boosts and all the classic kart racing fun.
What caught my eye right away was how the track seems to be painted beneath your tires as you drive. According to Mythic Kart Racer’s Steam page, you can “make your own course while you drive, using your player as a brush.” This innovative mechanic lets you create a racing track organically, without the need for constant testing. The developer explains, “It’s the best way to create a course without thinking about it. You naturally make something that feels good to drive through, without having to test it. I’ve lost hours testing my game, without noticing it, so make sure to take a break!”
Developer Dream Mix Games also shared some insights into the game’s inspirations: “I’ve merged the best aspects from all of the best kart racers — a certain bandicoot, the best middle-aged plumber, and I even took some tips from a spiky blue guy. While those games inspired me, the Mythic world is its own place, and the physics in this game feel super unique.”
Additionally, the developer revealed on Reddit that an overhead track editor will be added eventually, giving players another way to design their courses.
Mythic Kart Racer doesn’t have an official release date yet, but it will launch in early access when ready. From there, the developer estimates it will be “at the very least one year from release, but it may be extended depending on the progress of the game.”
Here’s to more “X Maker” games—giving players creative freedom to build and enjoy their favorite genres in new and exciting ways!
