Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has launched a bold campaign accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Election Commission of India (ECI) of electoral manipulation. Gandhi promises to soon reveal what he calls “open-and-shut proof” of systematic vote theft, claiming his party possesses a “hydrogen bomb” of evidence that will expose these alleged irregularities. When questioned if this evidence pertains to PM Modi’s Varanasi constituency, Gandhi left it open for interpretation.
### Accusations Against the Election Commission and PM Modi
Gandhi has specifically accused Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar of protecting individuals involved in vote theft. He referenced an ongoing CID investigation in Karnataka, where reportedly over 6,000 names were deleted from the electoral rolls. Gandhi described this as a significant indictment of the CEC, stating, “Gyanesh Kumar is exactly the CEC that the Karnataka CID is asking for.”
### BJP’s Rejection and Response
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has strongly rejected Gandhi’s allegations. Senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad accused him of misleading the public and inciting unrest among young voters. Prasad questioned the motive behind Gandhi’s social media posts urging young Indians to “save democracy from vote theft,” implying that these claims are baseless and politically motivated.
### Mixed Reactions Within the Congress
Gandhi’s “vote theft” campaign has sparked a debate among Congress leaders themselves. While some commend him for the careful preparation and assertive execution of the campaign, others fear it could undermine the credibility of Indian democracy.
Senior Congress leader Abhishek Singhvi defended the approach, stating that the party aims to highlight electoral issues while avoiding legal traps set by BJP counterparts. Nevertheless, some leaders within the party question whether focusing on vote theft allegations should be the primary strategy against the BJP.
### Internal Criticism and Concerns
Critics within Congress caution that the campaign may backfire. A former member of the Congress Working Committee warned that such serious allegations risk delegitimizing democratic institutions. Another ex-leader argued that focusing on vote fraud accusations might serve as a cover-up for deeper organizational neglect and decline within the party.
They further pointed out that if voter fraud were indeed occurring on the scale alleged, it could also be interpreted as a failure on the part of the party’s local representatives to maintain a strong ground presence during elections.

Rahul Gandhi’s campaign against alleged electoral malpractices continues to stir discussions both inside and outside the Congress party, highlighting divisions on how best to confront the ruling BJP ahead of upcoming elections.
