The European Commission will adopt a plan dedicated to supporting women in research and innovation next year, according to Ekaterina Zaharieva, the commissioner responsible for start-ups, research, and innovation.

“The action plan will propose measures addressing the specific needs of women in research and innovation,” Zaharieva said during a workshop organized on November 5 by STOA, the European Parliament’s science and technology advisory panel.

She added that the plan will help make universities, labs, and start-ups safe from harassment and gender-based violence. It will also support women who want to combine a family and a scientific career, as well as increase support for women-led start-ups and scale-ups.

A call for evidence to inform the development of the plan will be issued by the end of 2025.

Although women account for nearly half of doctoral graduates, gender disparities persist in the research and innovation sectors. This upcoming action plan aims to tackle these challenges and promote greater equality.
