When No. 2 Northwestern went down 2-0 just over 10 minutes into a Final Four showdown with No. 1 North Carolina on Friday, the odds were stacked against it. No team had overcome a multi-goal deficit in a national semifinal or national final contest since 2011. But the Wildcats (21-1, 8-0 Big Ten) remained unfazed by trends and statistics, adding a goal in the second, third and fourth quarters to send what looked easily like a Tar Heel takedown into overtime. Then, following nine minutes worth of sudden-death free field hockey, graduate student midfielder Maddie Zimmer took the ball the length of the field following a UNC penalty opportunity. She dished it to graduate student forward Grace Schulze, whose pass bounced off a Tar Heel player’s foot and into the net. Now, vying for their second-straight national championship, the ’Cats will face No. 3 Princeton on Sunday at noon.
