SAN JOSE The No. 11 seed Cabrillo College men’s soccer team saw its postseason run come to a close Tuesday. The Seahawks were eliminated by the No. 3 Evergreen Valley 3-1 in the third round of the 3C2A NorCal Regional playoffs. Cabrillo (11-6-5 overall), the third-place finisher in the Coast Conference’s North Division, graduates 16 sophomores, many of whom are garnering interest from NCAA Division I and D-II programs. “It was a very good season,” Seahawks coach Paolo Carbone said. “There were some teaching moments for the kids. Our job is to prepare them for the next level. I think we did it.” Evergreen Valley opened scoring on a deflected shot in the 43rd minute, and made 2-0 in the second half. Yoan Ponio, a sophomore forward out of Saint Etienne, France, scored an unassisted goal for the Seahawks in the 67th minute. It was his eighth goal of the season and the 24th of his Seahawks career. He missed a chance from point-blank range later in the half, before the Hawks added an insurance tally in the 80th minute. “We created a lot of opportunities, but we didn’t capitalize on them,” Carbone said. Freshman goalie Bryan Bravo Martinez made four saves for the Seahawks. Evergreen Valley (16-3-3) plays at No. 2 Hartnell (16-3-4) in the fourth round in Salinas on Saturday. The winner advances to the 3C2A State Tournament semifinals at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo on Dec. 5. THE SCORE Evergreen Valley 3, Cabrillo 1 Up next: End of season.
